Summer Issue: Library quad a prime venue for free speech

Squirrels pestering students for food the moment they sit down, a semi-active water fountain, a religious demonstration or two and a shady overhang can all be found in Sacramento State’s library quad.

The quad is a sitting area in front of the library’s entrance where numerous events are held each semester.

Sac State’s student radio station, KSSU — 1580 on the AM dial — is allowed to host four events in the quad each semester and sponsors many more. KSSU has been Sac State’s student radio station since 1989 and can be heard on campus and on the Internet.

“Since we’re funded by (Associated Student Inc.), when ASI is having an event we usually co-sponsor it,” said Rafael Chavez, KSSU’s station managerASI-funded clubs, and ASI themselves, also sponsor events in the quad. Green Sting, a volunteer group of Sac State students who promote events and try to spread school spirit, held two barbecues for charity during the spring semester.

“If we feel it is good for the students, we participate in it,” Chavez said.Students also use the library quad to relax between classes.

“Usually there’s a lot of people that I hang out with (in the quad),” said Jennifer Ford, a junior business major.

Lacie Marchetti, a senior communications major, “likes to people watch” when hanging out in the bustling quad.

The lawn area surrounding the quad houses advertisements for on-campus events. Various clubs, vendors, sororities and fraternities also set up booths or tables in the area.

Various organizations and clubs hold political demonstrations in the library quad.

On May 4, a religious group named Street Ministries came to campus holding a sign stating, “Homosexuality is Sin,” which sparked two incidents in which students tried to rip the sign down.

Everything from fraternities and sororities finding pledges at the beginning of each semester to a man holding a five-foot sign stating “The End Is Near” can be seen on the lawn surrounding the quad area throughout the semester.
