Pugh dominant in blowout
January 25, 2005
Jameel Pugh has made it a habit of taking his last warm-up shot before a game from the Hornets logo near mid-court, often times draining it.
But on Tuesday night, he missed.
It would end up being just one of a few misses in Pugh’s record-breaking night, however, as the senior would go on to score 40 points on 15-of-22 shooting – including 8-of-13 in 3-pointers – to lead the Hornets to an 88-59 non-conference victory over William Jessup University.
It was the highest point total in a single game by a Hornet since Sacramento State shifted to Division I in 1991. The previous game-high was 36, set by Damond Edwards in 1997.Pugh also set a new school record in field goals made and tied the school record in 3-pointers made.
Pugh’s night also included four steals, three rebounds and multiple high-flying dunks.
The Hornets (6-13, 2-4) have won five straight home games. Sac State will play its next three Big Sky Conference games at home over the next two weeks.
The Hornets controlled the Warriors (5-15) throughout the game, shooting 59.7 percent from the floor and 43.5 percent from 3-point range.
William Jessup, formerly known as San Jose Christian prior to the school’s move to Rocklin in August 2004, is NAIA affiliated.
The Hornets used their size, strength and overall athleticism to score inside and on transition, creating open looks from long range. The Hornets out-rebounded the Warriors 37-28.
Junior point guard DaShawn Freeman, still playing limited minutes because of a hamstring injury, had eight assists and four steals in just 18 minutes.
As a team, the Hornets recorded 24 assists and 14 steals.
Junior Chris Lange, in his first home game since returning from academic ineligibility, scored nine points in 23 minutes.
The Hornets led 50-29 at the half.
Kyle Hood led the Warriors with 17 points on 7-of-17 shooting. After missing his first three 3-point attempts, Hood caught fire early in the second half, connecting on three straight 3-pointers – smirking at the crowd and his bench after each made shot. He went on to miss his next five attempts, finishing 3-of-11 from behind the arc.
Hornets leading scorer Jason Harris rested and did not dress.
The Hornets will face Northern Arizona on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Hornets Nest.
