The first time the Sacramento State women’s basketball team faced UC Davis, Kim Sheehy scored one point and grabbed three rebounds in a 58-50 loss to the Aggies.

Wednesday night, Sheehy hit five 3-pointers in the Hornets second game against Davis, but the result was the same as Sac State fell to the Aggies 74-65.

Davis was led by junior forward Lara Gray’s double-double, she had 17 points and 10 rebounds. However, she was not alone as four of the five Davis starters scored in double figures. Junior guard Kimberly Smith and Gray each scored 17, junior center Ellen Porshneva accounted for 18 and sophomore forward Jessica Campbell banked 11 points.

The fifth starter for Davis, junior guard Jackie Turpin just fell shy of double digits with nine points but added six rebounds and seven assists.

The Hornets allowed the Aggies to come out hot, staking Davis to a 10-2 lead early in the first half before going on an 10-0 run to take the lead midway through the period. Davis hit four treys, paced by Smith with three.

However, Sheehy converted on all three of her shots from behind the arc to help Sac State enter the locker room at the tied, 25-25.

Junior center Katelyn Ciampi scored eight points and corralled four rebounds for the first half, en route 14 points and 8 boards for the night. She was one of four Hornets in scoring double figures. Besides Ciampi’s 14 points and Sheehy’s 17, junior forward Ashley Cadotte scored 12 points and also grabbed seven rebounds while senior guard Tyeisha Brown scored 13.

The second half of the game was a different story as Davis started the half blisteringly hot converting its first eight shots. For the half, the Aggies shot 64 percent from the field and 57 percent from downtown, against the Hornet’s 45 percent and 43 percent from beyond the arc. Davis scored the first six points of the half and never looked back, fending off a Sac State rally late in the second half to hold on for the win.
