Title catcher Fred Amey going for conference win
September 7, 2004
Fred Amey isn’t concerned with statistics or individualaccolades, his concern is winning.
“My goal this year is to win the conference and make theplayoffs,” said Amey when asked about his team hopes thisyear.
Amey will look to Leadingham to get him the ball this season;the two were only in the lineup together in 2003 for fivegames.
“Ryan is just an overall great guy,” Amey said.”He doesn’t look like a physical guy, but he’sthe best leader I have ever had.”
After struggling to put points on the board last year, Hornethead coach Mooshagian made several changes on the offensive side ofthe ball.
This year Mooshagian promoted Craig Young to offensivecoordinator. The two coaches switched around the offense, takingSac State from a spread out passing style to a box set using thefull back.
Amey agreed with these changes considering now it will be muchmore difficult to key one individual on the field. With threeoffensive weapons, Amey is excited about seeing more open looksinstead of the double teams he has been faced with throughout hiscollege career.
Now in his final season, Amey has matured much as a player. In 5years, his fundamentals and details to the game have improved andhas become the model football player.
“Fred is a man amongst boys and a joy to bound,”Mooshagian said, “he has grown leaps and bounds as aplayer.”
The Hornet wide receiver holds the records for career receptions(172), receptions for touchdowns (21), and receptions in a singleseason (62).
This year Amey returns stronger than ever after conditioning andlifting twice daily during the off season, and is excited to beginthe season with healthy teammates running back Tyronne Gross andquarterback Ryan Leadingham, a luxury he only had for a portion oflast year.
After two record setting years with exactly 989 yards,Amey’s only individual goal is to break 1,000 receiving yardsthis fall.
With those numbers Amey should have plenty to celebrate about, but this fall you will not see any fancy dancing in the endzone.
After being penalized twice for taunting resulting in anejection in last year’s 69-19 rout of Saint Mary’s,Amey promises the only celebration he will do this year is a singlepoint to God.
So what comes after college for the best receiver in Hornethistory? Like all great college athletes, Amey looks to take it tothe next level and go pro.
With high school buddies like Dallas Cowboys’ safety RoyWilliams already doing damage in the NFL, Amey wants to live hisdream and play professional football.
“I would like to go pro and take care of the people whotook care of me, my parents.”
