Spirit group finally picks name, then committees
September 20, 2004
“Green Sting” filled in the blanks for the nameless group on campus, as members of the newly combined Green Thunder and Sting Team narrowed down the possible names last week.
“Savage Swarm” and “Fear the Sting” were two alternative titles the students were considering, but “Green Sting” received the most votes. –
The largest differences between the new group and last year’s Green Thunder and Sting Team are the students’ and the organization’s goal. Freshmen are no longer the only students eligible to participate, and Sacramento State athletics isn’t the only department it will support.
“We are getting ready for the Causeway Classic where our football team will play against the UC Davis Aggies,” Cadranel said. “This will be the event’s fifty-first anniversary.”
Sac State’s student-oriented group is planning the sporting event and looks forward to supporting its school during the game scheduled for Sept. 25 at UC Davis.
The students have started to show interest for student involvement and have grown in number since the start of the semester.
“There have been, on average, 40 new members at every meeting,” said Kyle Hasapes, co-adviser for Green Sting. “We started out with about 70-80 members and have grown to about 150.”
The student-run group plans to hold a pre-game spirit event at the residence halls on Thursday. Activities like a quarterback throwing contest, pin-the-tail-on-the-aggie, prize drawings and a pinata will take place from 6:30-8 p.m.
The event will last for only one day, against original plans, since Green Sting started late into the semester.
“We didn’t have time to plan an entire week devoted to the game, so it’s going to be just a one-day event,” Hasapes said.
The group organized into committees last week. Committees on advertising, set up, prop set up, and take down will help run everything smoothly. Green Sting has future plans for student involvement.
“Depending on this Sunday’s meeting, we will post fliers on campus for a day where we will try to get all of the students to wear Sac State apparel,” Hasapes said.
Members of Green Sting will travel together by bus to and from the big game against the UC Davis Aggies. Shirts will be passed out to every student and those coming to watch the game.
