Kansas not Kind

The early season struggle continues for the women’s basketball team, as the still winless Hornets (0-8) dropped their second home game of the season 70-39 to San Jose State on Tuesday.
Despite a 14-point showing from senior forward Danielle Iceman, Sac State’s defense failed to stop Spartan forward Tatiana Taylor, who scored a game-high 23 points.
The Hornets returned to the Spartans after traveling to Manhattan, Kan. for the Commerce Bank tournament and fell to the University of Texas-Pan American 60-50 on Saturday afternoon.
It was a sloppy and error-filled contest, with both teams turning the ball over 28 times.
The Hornets trailed 27-21 at halftime after shooting just 25 percent, but fought back in the second half by shooting 45 percent and actually took a 41-39 lead with 8:40 left.
But Texas- Pan American would hold Sacramento State scoreless for the next six minutes en route to the win.
“We shot 50 percent from the free-throw line and missed some easy shots around the basket,” head coach Dan Muscatell said.
Sarah Craig led the Hornets with 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting. Katelyn Ciampi added 10 points.
The Hornets’ weekend started off even rockier as they were pounded by the No. 12 in the nation, Kansas State Wildcats 94-31 on Friday afternoon.
Muscatell admitted his team was shell-shocked by the talented Wildcats, who had 27 assisted baskets and four players scoring in double figures.
“They were by far the most complete team we’ve played thus far,” Muscatell said. They played at an extremely high level.”
Sac State shot just 21 percent for the game and by halftime the game was all but over, as they trailed 52-22.
Tyeisha Brown was the only Hornet in double figures, with 11 points on 4-of-11 shooting.
The Wildcats shot 50 percent for the game led by Laurie Koehn and Kendra Walker, who both scored 20 points.
Next the Hornets will travel to the University of Nevada Reno, on Saturday.
