Sac State falls in first round

In a match filled with emotion from both sides, the Sacramento State men’s soccer team was eliminated from the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament by the San Diego State Aztecs 3-1 Thursday night at Hornet Soccer Field.
SDSU, the No.4 seed in the MPSF tourney, will face the top-seeded San Jose State Spartans Friday at 7 p.m. As for the Hornets, their season ends with a 5-11-2 overall record.
The Aztecs’ Kevin Sapanli put SDSU on the board in the 4th minute to make the score 1-0. Senior midfielder Sam Sneed tied the match for the Hornets in the 19th minute on an assist from junior Pat Powers.
Raul Baptiste would put the Aztecs in the lead for good in the 36th minute as he beat Hornet goalkeeper Matt McDougall to his left side to make the score 2-1. The sophomore was making his first appearance in goal since Oct. 6.
Sapanli would add another goal in the 53th minute to put the game and the Hornets away for a final 3-1 loss.
