Sacramento State pushed the 12th-ranked Santa Clara University Broncos to the limit in a five-game match on Tuesday.
Junior middle hitter Emily Wilson had a career performance, finishing with 15 kills and a .488 hitting percentage as well as a career- high 13 blocks.
The block total tied Wilson for third on the all-time list with former Hornet standout Tasman Dwyer.
In the end, Santa Clara middle blocker Becky Potter flexed her All-American muscle, posting 23 kills and 20 digs as the Broncos escaped with the win.
The teams traded wins in the first four games of the match. The Hornets carried the momentum of a 30-20 victory in game four into the final showdown, only to be overwhelmed, 15-11, by the Broncos’ nearly flawless execution.
“There were times when we played great, and there were times when we made too many mistakes,” Wilson said.
Sac State “played great” in games two-four, where they posted .323, .319, and .417 hitting percentages. The mistakes came mostly in games one and five, where the percentages dropped to .143 and .125.
“We weren’t always there mentally,” Wilson said. “We made a few mistakes here and there and we gave them points.”
Junior outside hitter Sandra Bandimere led the Hornets with 18 kills and also had 12 digs. Freshman outside hitter Jennifer Ferguson also had a double-double (12 kills, 14 digs) and senior middle hitter Kazmiera Imrie contributed 13 kills.
