Hornets unable to hold on to early lead
September 30, 2003
Jenae Kee scored her team-leading third goal of the season as Sacramento State tied the visiting Cal State Northridge Matadors 1-1 on Sunday afternoon at Hornet Soccer Field. With the tie the Hornets are now 2-4-1, while Cal State Northridge goes to 2-4-3.
Kee put the Hornets on the scoreboard in the 11th minute when junior Sela Suarez found Kee open in front of the goal. Kee then sent a shot into the left corner of the net to give Sac State an early 1-0 lead.
The Hornets were the aggressors in the first half of play, controlling possession and taking a 1-0 lead into the break. The Matadors bullied their way in a very physical second half full of whistles and flared tempers between both teams.
In the 70th minute Northridge sophomore forward Leila Pate tied the score at 1-1 with an unassisted goal to the left corner of the net.
“We let them back in the game on a misclear,” Hornets head coach Karen Hanks said of the goal. “They had the momentum in the second half after the goal. We could have put them away in the first half.”
With the score tied at 1-1, the remainder of the game was full of exciting plays and near misses.
In the 76th minute Hornet sophomore Mandi Siller sent a shot that barely missed, going wide of the left post.
Pate almost gave the Matadors the lead when her shot missed just wide of the left post in the 78th minute.
Hornet forward Lisamarie La Vallee nearly ended the game 16 minutes into overtime with a shot off a deflection just a few yards away from the goal line, but Matador goalkeeper Jen Jasper made a diving save to preserve the tie.
Freshman goalkeeper Stephanie Shaw played all 110 minutes for the Hornets and recorded 10 saves.
Maggie Murphy and Linda Sanchez led Sac State with five shots each. For Sanchez, it was her first game back after sitting out several games with an injury.
The Hornets will play the University of San Francisco Dons at 4 p.m. on Friday at Hornet Soccer Field followed by the University of Utah Utes at 1 p.m on Sunday. The Dons (4-6-0) are coming off a 4-0 victory over Cal State Northridge on Friday.
Freshmen forwards Chelsea Hunt and Shuree Hyatt lead the Dons. Hunt scored three goals against Northridge and Hyatt leads the Dons with six goals on the season.
The USF defense is anchored by senior goalkeeper Jen Orantes, who has recorded shutouts in all four victories this season.
The Utes (8-1-0) are ranked No. 24 in the nation and are off to their best start in the program’s history. Utah is coming off a 1-0 victory over the No. 2 ranked Florida Gators Sunday in Utah.
Utah’s balanced scoring attack is led by junior forward Lauren Field, who has five goals, senior Amber Bower, who has four goals and senior Missy Dennis who has three scores on the season.
