Box Score: vs Portland State

The Sacramento State women’s soccer team was pillaged by the Portland State University Vikings, 4-1, Sunday.

For the Hornets, the game continued a seven-game losing streak, and has left the team winless in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.

Sac State has started off 0-2 in conference play so far this year. The team has also dominated in the past against Portland posting a career 5-2 record against the Vikings, but this season Sacramento was unable to pull out a win.

“We knew they’d be good. They’d improved quite a bit from last year. They were a good team,” Hornet coach Karen Hanks said.

Portland State drew first blood when Katie Miyake, the Vikings’ leader in points, nailed down a goal in the 24th minute.

For Miyake, the goal was her sixth this season and puts her in a tie for third place in program history.

The game remained at 1-0 until the 50th minute, when the Vikings’ Amy Orr scored off a deflected corner kick, giving Portland State a two goal advantage.

Sac State answered back in the 61st minute when Hilaree Guay, only seconds after she had been substituted in for Katie DeClercq, sent a ball into the back of the Vikings’ net.

For Guay, the goal was her first of the season, but it was also the last time Sac State would score in the contest.

Starting in the 81st minute, Jordan Bishop scored the first of two unanswered goals when she knocked down a header off a throw-in from deep in the corner.

Five minutes later, Bishop followed up with her second goal of the game, finishing off the Hornets with four minutes of play remaining. Sac State was unable to respond.

“We had plenty of chances, we just didn’t finish. That killed us,” Hanks said. “The game was a lot closer than the score. It was 2-1 up until the end of the game.”

The Vikings outshot the Hornets, 13-6.

Lisa Wrightsman led the team in shots with four, three of which were on goal.

Wrightsman was followed by Guay, whose lone shot resulted in Sac State’s only score.

Courtney Gorham had one shot also, while no other Hornets were able to find the opportunity to place the ball on goal.

The Hornets recorded a season-high 12 offsides violations in the game.

“They were pulling an outside trap,” Hanks said. “We were trying to get in behind them. We were a little eager.”

The Hornets will return to Hornet Field to host Eastern Washington University on Friday, at 4 p.m. They will also host the University of Montana on Sunday at noon.
