?Fashionably Loud? philanthropy benefits Big Brothers/Big Sisters of America
May 6, 2002
A combination concert/fashion show based on MTV?s “Fashionably Loud” is coming to Sacramento State?s University Union Ballroom May 9 at 7 p.m., hosted by the Kappa Sigma fraternity.
This is the second such show hosted by Kappa Sigma. The event was created with the goal of raising money for the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of America Foundation.
“We have nine of the 10 sororities on campus participating,” said Mike Olivas, president of Sacramento State?s Kappa Sigma chapter. “This isn?t about Kappa Sigma. This is about Big Brothers/Big Sisters and the Sac State Greek Community. A large portion of the proceeds are going to charity.”
The three-round show is a combination of popular music matched with some of today?s hottest fashions.
Some of each sorority?s member will members model clothing in a three-round competition.
The first round will be a procession of formal wear matched with rhythm and blues, creating a slow-dance atmosphere reminiscent of prom nights and fraternity/sorority formals.
The second round will have pop culture?s casual kids bobbing their heads to hip-hop, rap and dance music.
The final round will heat up with a combination of rock and beachwear.
Judging the event will be an evenly split panel of male and females from Sac State?s Greek community.
Each sorority will be rewarded points for originality, enthusiasm, style, creativity and participation.
The sorority with the most points at the end of the competition will be crowned the winner.
“First place is a three-foot trophy with engraved letters of victory on the base,” said Olivas. Other prizes include clothing from the sponsors.
“Fashionably Loud 2002” is a time for the Greek community to come together and throw the student body an MTV-style jam.
“We have been preparing for this for almost a year now,” Olivas said . “It looks like it is going to be huge. Everyone is invited to attend, not just Greeks. If you?re going to come, come early.”
The event should last until 10 p.m. Tickets are $5 in advance and $7 at the door and student ID is required. Brothers of Kappa Sigma will be selling tickets around campus, so be on the lookout.
