A ?Ride? worth taking
October 9, 2001
The new horror thriller “Joy Ride” tells the story of two brothers on a drive to pick up a hometown friend and how fun isn?t always fun.
Written by Clay Tarver and Jeffrey Abrams and directed by John Dahl, the story starts out with Lewis Thomas (Paul Walker) planning to pick up hometown friend Venna (Leelee Sobieski) from college. Lewis finds out that his brother Fuller (Steve Zahn) is in jail?again. He bails out his brother and they start their adventure.
Along the way they pick up a CB radio and decide to have some fun. They make up code names and start playing a game, messing with gullible truckers. After hooking one, they have some fun tricking him and resume their trip.
After picking up Venna they realize their gullible trucker is still playing the game with roles reversed. He?s the one laughing now. With all the cards stacked in his favor, truck driver Rusty Nail (Matthew Kimbrough) is teaching these kids that sometimes the ones you laugh at laugh back.
Take a ride and see how far you?ll go to get a good laugh, how far is too far and exactly how far is far enough.
With a mixture of comedy, adventure and horror, this ride is one worth taking.
3 out of 4 stars.
