Women?s tennis misses chance to play in Big Sky Championships
April 17, 2001
Ending a season on a losing streak is no fun, and it leaves a bad taste in any mouth. Unfortunately, for the Sac State women?s tennis team, that is exactly what happened.
The Hornets lost their last three matches, and ended any chance of taking part in the Big Sky Championships being hosted by Sac State this weekend.
Sac State needed to win its last match in regional play to qualify for this weekend?s championships, but lost to Northern Arizona, 4-1. The Hornets also lost to CSU Northridge, 5-2, and Weber State, 6-1. The team opened up regional play with a 7-0 spanking of Portland State.
Head coach Bill Campbell believes the team performed well all season.
“The girls played well,” he said. “I said all season that they were a young team. We had a lot to learn this year.”
The women finished the season 11-10 overall, tying its best mark in Division I history. The 1992 team also went 11-10.
Saturday, the Hornets faced Northern Arizona, but fell short of their goal to reach the postseason.
“We knew it was going to come down to NAU Saturday,” Campbell said. “They all knew the importance of the NAU match.”
Sophomore Marta Gronowicz was the only player to earn a victory for the Hornets.
Gronowicz, the number two singles player, went 15-6 in singles play this season. The Hornets also lost to CSU Northridge and Weber State. Campbell stated that these two matches were tough.
In the 5-2 loss to Northridge, Sac State won the number one and three singles matches; its only two wins of the day. Junior Gabriella Lundqvist won 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, while senior Caroline Svensson defeated her opponent 6-4, 7-6. Lundqvist finished the season 13-8 and Svensson finished 16-3.
Thursday afternoon, Sac State was defeated by Weber State, 6-1. The only victory for the Hornets came from Svensson.
During the tournament, the Hornets? top three players performed well while the young, bottom half of the lineup is still learning to play at the college level.
“Our top three players have all played Division I tennis before,” Campbell said. “But the other three do not have as much experience at the college level.”
Although Campbell was disappointed that the team did not make the Big Sky Championships, he said the team did reach some goals that they had set out to accomplish.
“I feel good about it (the season),” Campbell said. “We had three goals set out at the beginning of the season. One of our goals was to finish above .500. The other two were to beat Davis and make the Big Sky Championships.”
The regular season has now come to a close, but some of the players will take part in the Ojai Tournament April 26 through 29 in Ojai, Ca. Lundqvist and Gronowicz will compete in singles play, while the top two doubles teams will compete as well. Gronowicz and junior Janice Mota will team up, as will Lundqvist and Svensson.
