Sacramento State will host “El Espiritu de Mexico,” a presentation of traditional Mexican dance, music and song Friday, April 6 through Sunday, April 8, in the Solano Hall dance studio, Room 1010. Shows are at 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday, with a 4 p.m. matinee show on Sunday.

“El Espiritu de Mexico,” or “The Spirit of Mexico,” is presented by Raices de Mi Tierra Grupo Folklorico, a CSUS-based group that puts on shows throughout the region. “Over the years, they’ve done a lot of work in the region illustrating the art form,” said Leonard Valdez, director of Sac State?s Multi-Cultural Center. The group is “well-known in the region,” he said.

Raices de Mi Tierra Grupo Folklorico has operated at Sac State for four years, says Martha Dominguez, a member of the group, who has been with it from the beginning. “Our group’s goal is to keep Mexican dance traditions alive,” she said. The group includes students from Sac State and other area colleges, as well as participants who are no longer in school.

The show consists of several dances from different parts of Mexico, such as Jalisco, Veracruz, Concheras, and Guerrero; each region has its own dance and costume. The group performs for all age groups, and has had shows at the California State Fair and the Festival de la Familia.

Tickets are available at the CSUS Central Ticket Office, or through www.tickets.com. Prices are $18 for general admission, $15 for students and seniors, and $12 for children under 12.
