The key to a successful season is being able to win at home, butunfortunately for the Sac State women?s tennis team it could only winone of its three home matches over the weekend.Sac State (6-4) lost to Nevada 6-1 Sunday afternoon, beat Gonzaga 6-1Saturday, and lost to Northern Iowa 4-3 Thursday.
Sunday?s contest was against Nevada, a tough opponent. Nevada wasundefeated at 8-0 leading into the contest against Sac State.
“They were a very good team,” head coach Bill Campbell said. “I thinkthey will be favored to win their conference.”
The match started out with doubles play. With two of the first twodoubles matches resulting in a split, all eyes turned to the finalmatch, between the number one seeds. The match was pushed to the limit, but Nevada was able to withstand the late rally by the Hornets and win9-7, enabling Nevada to win the doubles point.
“That was the best our doubles have played all year,” Campbell said.
Singles play was all Nevada as well. Sac State was only able to win thenumber two singles match. Sophomore Marta Gronowicz was able to overcomea first set loss, and fight back for a 6-7, 6-3, 7-5 win.
Campbell thought that Gronowicz was able to come back and play wellen-route to her ninth singles win this season.
Saturday?s contest had far better results, as Sac State was able todefeat Gonzaga 6-1.Campbell believed Gonzaga was a tough opponent and created a bigchallenge for the Hornets.”Gonzaga was a better team than I thought. There were a lot of closematches.”
