Women?s tennis enjoys winning week in Hawaii
March 13, 2001
Returning home after playing four matches in Hawaii, the Sac State women?s tennis team has now tied last year’s win total with five. The team went 3-1 in Hawaii, improving its record to 5-2.
“We did real well in Hawaii. The girls played well,” coach Bill Campbell said. “I would hope we would end up with 12 wins this season.”
The team still has more than half of their season left to play.
While in Hawaii, the team played four matches, winning its first three and losing its final match.
Campbell thought that the competition was good, with some teams being better than others.
“Hawaii was real tough. Xavier and Villanova had a couple of good players, and Colorado State had six good players.
Sac State opened its play against Hawaii, winning 4-3. It was able to win all three doubles matches, taking a 1-0 lead. Heading into singles play, Sac State lost its number four through six matches, but won the number one through three singles matches to beat Hawaii.
The game came down to the number three match, where senior Caroline Svensson was able to hold off Silvia Ricote of Hawaii. With all other matches completed and the score tied at 3-3, Svensson came back to win 5-7, 6-4, 6-1.
“The first day we played Hawaii, and they beat us last year,” Campbell said. “Caroline lost twice last year to her opponent. That was the deciding factor (in the match).”
The Hornets next two matches were far different than their first match. The team went on to play Xavier, winning 7-0. The Hornets did not lose a match, winning all six singles matches and winning the doubles point by winning all three doubles matches.
The next day, the Hornets took their winning ways to the court and defeated Villanova 6-1. The team won all three doubles matches, and then won five of the six singles matches.
Sac State finished up its Hawaii road trip losing to Colorado State, 4-3. Sac State won the top three singles matches, but lost its other three singles matches. Colorado State was able to win two of the three doubles matches to win the match 4-3.
During the trip, Sac State?s number one through three singles players went undefeated. Junior Gabriella Lundqvist, sophomore Marta Gronowicz, and Svensson were able to outlast their opponents and win all their matches. Lundqvist and Gronowicz are undefeated this season, while Svensson has only lost once.
“The top two haven?t lost this year, and Caroline has lost only one match,” Campbell said. “All three are playing well. They played good opponents.”
In doubles, the number one team of Gronowicz and junior Janice Mota were able to win three of their four matches in Hawaii. The number two team of Lundqvist and Svensson went a perfect four for four in doubles competition.
Campbell believes these teams are beginning to mesh together and that is why they are successful.
“The top two doubles teams are doing well playing together.”The team will now play its next seven matches at home, and the Hornets hope to hit their stride going into the championships.
“We have three matches this week. I sure wouldn?t want to be doing this on the road,” Campbell said. “I hope we hit our stride going into the end of our season.”
