Sacramento State police officer involved in shooting
March 11, 2001
A Sacramento State Campus Police officer was involved in a shooting early Saturday morning. The incident occurred at 7-Eleven on La Riviera Drive near Sac State when Steve Yount, 38, was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence.
According to an article in The Sacramento Bee, Yount was accidentally shot once in the buttocks while officers were attempting to calm him down.
Yount was shot by a City police officer, not a Sac State officer, said John Hamrick, public information officer for Campus Police. “Our officer was not the one whose weapon discharged,” Hamrick said.
Both the Sacramento City and Sac State police departments are conducting their owninvestigations, he said.
“The officer involved has been on his days off and hasn’t been back to work yet,” Hamrick said. “We hope to have this cleared up by the time he gets back to work.”
