March 31, 2001
“5/15/45 – The Last Dance” a modern dance performance, will be performed at 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 1 at the University Ballroom.
This performance is based on the displacement and relocation of the Japanese American internment experience during World War II. The date on the title, 5/15/45 is the date of the end of the war.
June Watanabe, a survivor of an internment camp, choreographed this show. She was three years old when she occupied the camp. She has now developed five different modern dance versions based on this experience.
The National Endowment for the Arts, an independent U.S, Government agency, the Rockefeller Fund, a grant-making foundation, the California Civil Liberties Public Education Program and the California Arts Council have all supported Watanabe and her work.
The music to “5/15/45 – The Last Dance” was by composer Alvin Curran. Visual Design was by John Woodall. There will be six dancers, a storyteller and a 17-piece swing band. The show will be performed in 1940s-style swing and audience members will be invited to participate in swing dance after the show.
