Before heading off to sunny Hawaii, the Sac State men?s tennis team won two Big Sky Conference matches in unfriendly weather conditions. The Hornets improved to 4-1 overall, and 2-0 in conference play.
Sac State defeated Northern Arizona 5-2 on Saturday, while downing Idaho State 4-0 in a weather shortened match Friday.
“Northern Arizona is one of the top teams in the Big Sky,” coach Chris Evers said. “We looked pretty good. We clinched it (the match) real early.”
Sac State gained the victory when Sac State won the number three through six singles matches. Senior Chris Smith won the number three singles match for Sac State 6-0, 6-4. In the number four match junior Fabio Jesus, who was named Big Sky Conference Tennis Player of the Week, won 6-3, 6-1.
Jesus also won his doubles match, keeping him undefeated in singles and double play this season.Seniors Joseph Gilbert and Kevin Vieira won their matches 6-1, 6-1, and 7-5, 6-1 respectively. The lone losses for the Hornets came in the number one and two singles matches. Junior Sherif Zaher lost 6-3, 6-3, 7-6, while sophomore Sylvain Iff lost 6-3, 6-1.
“Sherif played real tough today,” Evers said. “Once you have the match, it?s tough to play.”In the doubles portion of the match, Sac State was able to win the number one and two matches to gain the point and push the final score to 5-2.
“We played okay in doubles, good enough to win,” Evers said.
Zaher and Gilbert teamed up to win 8-5, while Smith and Jesus won 8-6.
Friday?s contest against Idaho State was cut short because of weather conditions, but before mother nature stepped in, Sac State was able to win four matches and gain the victory against Idaho State 4-0.
“Everyone played great,” Evers said. “We won in straight sets.”
Zaher, playing in the number one singles match dealt his opponent a 6-3, 6-1 loss. Iff won his match 6-3, 6-3, while Smith beat his opponent 6-1, 6-4. Closing out the contest for Sac State was Jesus, smashing his opponent 6-1, 6-3.
The team will now travel to Hawaii and take part in the Hawaii Team Tournament. The team will play Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and close out its matches Sunday afternoon. The team will play Hawaii, Xavier, Villanova and Nebraska.
It will be a nice change of scenery for the Hornets, considering the team has had various rain shortened matches so far.
“Everyone?s dinged up, but we feel pretty good heading into Hawaii,” Evers said. “It will be nice to get out of this cold weather.”
