Nintendo Cross-Country tour hits Sac State
December 8, 2000
That’s right folks. That was a Nintendo van cruising around the parking lot near University Union Wednesday.
Nintendo’s annual Holiday Van Tour specifically made a stop at the campus to give the Hornet staff a sneak peak of some of its most requested toys for the shopping season.
The tour caters only to the media for security reasons. “We learned from the last time with Nintendo 64 that public showings doesn’t work. We think (another software game company) may have copied our design. So this time we are holding back. We will not have any public appearances,” said Thom Leonard, a representative from Team Nintendo.
The colorful, customized van has two 19-inch video screens, game centers for up to four players, the new video games and several Game Boys devices.
The tour started in Seattle (Nintendo’s headquarter) via Chicago, Ill; Cleveland, OH; Philadelphia, PA; Raleigh. NC; Atlanta, GA and Tampa, Florida.
Dallas, TX; Albuquerque, NM; Phoenix, AZ; Los Angeles and Sacramento round out Nintendo’s itinerary. The van’s next stop is Portland.
“I’m currently at 9,300 miles,” Leonard said of his excursion. “We hit 10,000 miles.”
Nintendo has a variety of games on tap for the holidays.
Mario Tennis, Mickey’s Speedway USA (in 3-D), Banjo-Kazooie, the futuristic Perfect Dark, John Madden Football 2001 and Pokemon’s Hey you Pikachu.
In addition, Pokemon Gold and Silver for Game Boy Color has been stores since Oct. 15.
On Oct. 26, Nintendo released its highly anticipated The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask. The game is apart of Nintendo’s best-selling Legend of Zelda series.
“Zelda has sold more than 800,000 copies since it was released in October,” said Cory Conner, Team Nintendo’s game specialist. “It’s was in development for two years and testing took three months just to make sure it worked properly.”
It’s a fun game,” Conner said.
