Microphone Check: “Stankonia”
December 30, 2000
Creativity is a skill that can only be mastered if you accept differences. For Dre and Big Boi of the hip-hop group Outkast, their skills are made apparent in their newest album, titled “Stankonia.”
As sounds from their third album make way through your ears you?ll notice that this hip-hop duo has come in touch with their musical instincts. A ripping guitar, notable turntable tricks, original keyboard and piano melodies and constructive use of percussive instruments are heard throughout this album.
The first single, “B.O.B.” or “Bombs Over Baghdad,” is a reflection of the chaotic lives that Outkast members have gone through. Although the title may lead you to think about war, it actually deals with being prepared to back up something you say or do.
“Humble Mumble” is a track about handling the ups and downs of life. It features singer Erykah Badu, who is also Dre?s former girlfriend. The first half of the song contains a Latin-sounding rhythm with a soothing melody. It then goes into a hyped up old-school beat with the distinct sounds of the cymbal bell and DJ scratches.
In “Ms. Jackson,” there is a sense of Outkast?s first album “Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik,” and second album “Aquemini.” The style of lyrical presentation takes you through Outkast?s artistic growth as Dre states his stance on the “Baby?s mama?s mama?s.”
These talented hip-hop artists have created yet another worthy album for the hip-hop heads. But this time, they have utilized their flair for musical innovation. Stankonia supplies a funk-driven lyrical treat that can keep you dancing or instinctively singing the hooks.
