The Perfect Swing
November 6, 2000
A golf movie with a perfect swing is what “The Legend of Bagger Vance” is all about. A swing that can put the whole crowd in oohs and aahs. There has been a good bunch of golf movies that have been produced. With all the hype of golf, “The Legend of Bagger Vance” truly lives up to the legend.
“The Legend of Bagger Vance” provides us with truly unique characters that are unforgettable. The first character introduced in the movie was Hardy Greaves, an 80-year-old golfer who has a heart attack right on the golf course. During this commotion, he reminisces about the greatest golf championship he ever witnessed.
Hardy Greaves takes the audience back in time to the Depression Era of the 1930s in Savannah, Georgia. Michael Moncrief plays the young Hardy Greaves. He narrates through the whole movie. He introduces the ferocious golf player, Rannulph Junuh (Matt Damon), who is the greatest golf player to be born and bred in Savannah. Hardy is fascinated with everything about him.
The Depression Era turns ugly for Savannah. Junuh has to enlist for the war. He has to leave golf and his love, Adele Invergordon (Charlize Theron). Junuh saw each and every man die on the field during the war. This dramatizes Junuh and realizes this is too much for him. So he disappears from Savannah for 10 years. After Junuh left for the war, Savannah lost its spark for golf.
Junuh eventually returns to Savannah but hides for a while. That is, until there is a golf championship on a newly built golf course called Crew Island. The citizens of Savannah want Junuh to compete but there is only one problem: Junuh lost his swing. This is where Will Smith comes into the picture. He comes out of nowhere and becomes Junuh?s caddie, Bagger Vance. Bagger bets Junuh $5 guaranteed that he would win the golf championship only if he teaches him the perfect swing.
The golf championship sparks the love that Savannah once had for the sport. Everyone attends the event. Bagger Vance as his caddie and Hardy Greaves as his co-caddie accompany Junuh. Junuh competes with two other pro-golfers. Bagger is Junuh?s mentor throughout the championship. He helps him overcome his demons from the war and his personal life so he can find that perfect swing.
The movie is directed and produced by Robert Redford; the same man who directed and produced “The Milagro Beanfield War” and “A River Runs Through It.” The movie, “The Legend of Bagger Vance,” was released Nov. 3 and is distributed by Dreamworks.
