Up-and-coming band moves to Sacramento
October 26, 2000
One of the most recent up-and-coming bands in northern California has moved to Sacramento State.
Twin brothers, Joshua and Jonathan Wood, are freshmen this year at Sac State, and they have plans of making Free State a known name around Sacramento.
The band, consisting of Jonathan Wood, lead vocalist and guitar, Joshua Wood, back up vocalist and bassist, and drummer Eddie Bedell, first came together three years ago when the three attended high school together. It?s the same old story, a couple of friends sit around and watch “That Thing You Do” and boom, you?ve got a band.
When asked to describe their music, Joshua said, “Our influences are Creed, Staind and Blink 182, but we mainly sound like Creed.”
Originally from Siskiyou County, Free State has already made their name well known in those parts. They?ve headlined the Siskiyou County Fair and have played on the community stage the past three years, as well as local venues around Mt. Shasta such as the Coffee Connection and the Ski Park. Free State has also played the U-turn in Chico. One of their songs, “Narrow Road,” is being played several times a day on a Siskiyou radio station. The most prominent band Free State has played with is Ivor Kite, a very popular local band in Mt. Shasta.
The band has one demo tape out right now consisting of “Narrow Road” and “A Hero?s Trial.” They will be hitting the recording studio in Chico in a few weeks to make a longer version. The band hasn’t been confronted with any record producers yet, but they are always hopeful.
Free State’s next show will be Saturday at 9 p.m. at Aric?s Java, 1175 Fair Oaks Blvd., in Fair Oaks.
“We?re not even really sure where it?s [Aric?s Java] at. We?ll have to draw a map or something for people to find our show,” Wood said.
If you can?t make it to Aric’s Java, Free State will also be playing at the Maui Pizza Parlor on Friday, Nov. 3; Cosumnes River College at 1 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 6, and at Moxi?s in Chico on Sunday, Nov. 19 from 8p.m. until 10 p.m. They also have a tentative date set up for Friday, Nov. 17 at Java Jukebox off of J St. If you would like more information on this Saturday?s show, call Aric?s Java at (916) 961-BREW.
