Music department honors sports
October 2, 2000
From the traditional singing break in baseball?s seventh-inning stretch, to the most recent pop music anthem exciting a crowded stadium, music and sporting events always combine well.
The popular Meet the Music series here on campus celebrates this partnership on Saturday, Oct 7 with “Take Me Out to the Concert,” a tribute to sports featuring the CSUS Symphonic Wind Ensemble conducted by Wind Studies Director Dr. Robert Halseth. There will be two free shows open to the public at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
“The idea was to have a concert geared toward families,” said Glenn Disney, event coordinator for the CSUS music department. “We want people to bring their children.”
A special performance, just for local area schools, will be conducted for 700 elementary and middle school students on Friday, Oct. 6 at 9:30 a.m. The eight area schools involved are Leonardo Da Vinci Elementary, Excelsior Elementary, Leroy S. Greene Middle, Phoebe Hearst Elementary, Pioneer Elementary, Magnolia Intermediate, Star King Middle and Weimar Hills, and will all be on campus to attend the event.
“A lot of kids are into sports these days,” said Disney.
Meet the Music concerts offer a fun way for children to learn about music. Last years? series, “Niam, Portrait of a Gnome,” was such a success that it inspired a different theme performance this year.
This time out Professor Lindsay Bartlett will accompany the concert group on bassoon. Featured pieces will include John Williams? “Olympic Fanfare and Theme,” Gwyneth Walkers? “Match Point” conducted with a tennis racquet, and Jack Stamps? “Pastime.” Additionally, there will be a musical tribute to the San Francisco Giants.
