Comedy Competition returns to Sac State
September 27, 2000
Some of the best up-and-coming comedians will be performing at Sacramento State Thursday, Oct. 5 at 7:30 p.m., in the University Union Ballroom.
The event is the 25th edition of the San Francisco International Comedy Competition. The competition has “really good value. It’s good entertainment,” according to Bill Olmstead, University Union program advisor.
Comedy acts by renowned comedians such as Robin Williams and Ellen DeGeneres have spotlighted the winners circle in previous years at the competition. Past competing finalist and talented comedian Matt Weinhold will be hosting the competition this year.
Aside from his achievement through the competition, Weinhold has had a long-standing history with the community of San Francisco as “one of the brightest and most prolific members of the San Francisco comedy scene,” according to Strauss Mcgarr Entertainment.
The ten comedians in the semi-final round of the competition will be giving their best 10-12 minutes of material to hopefully compete as finalists in the next round.
“Some [comedians] will appeal to people more than others,” Olmstead said. Due to its great success at Sac State last year, the University Union Unique Programs have been able to offer the showcase for spectators again this year. The people who had attended the competition last year declared it as “hilarious.”
“[The competition] was well received. The Union has always done a lot with comedy,” Olmstead said.
The admission fee is $5.50 for Sac State students and $8 for the general public. The tickets are available at the CSUS Central Ticket Office or Tickets.com. For any additional information, call (916) 278-6997.
