Beer Dawgs reveal their wild side

Bob Pearce, better known as Bawb, patiently leans his head over as a cameraman gets a shot of the ‘paw print’ tattooed above the top of his shaven head.

“You got that yet?” the lead singer-songwriter of The Beer Dawgs said with a good-natured laugh.

The band has just finished playing tracks from their newest album, “Blonde on the Bayou,” for a crowd of about 100 people, including students, faculty and families at the Joe Serna Jr. Plaza.

There wasn?t a line of nude women dancing behind them, as the Beer Dawgs have experienced in the past, but the balmy, swamp-like weather last Wednesday made for a perfect setting for this Cajun Blues-style group.

“Back in the old days, me and Bob would get kind of wild,” Steve Wall, the lead guitarist said, with a big grin almost hidden by a ZZ-Top-like beard.

Wall and Pearce are the original Beer Dawgs, having played together for 14 years. Since the start, bass guitarist Andrew Brown, saxophonist Otis Mourning and drummer Dave Oppedal have replaced original members.

Beer Dawgs were inducted into the Sacramento Area Music Awards (SAMMIES) Hall-of-Fame about five years ago along with Mumbo Gumbo.

“We were the first two bands to get into the Hall of Fame,” Wall said.

“We won every year when they started the SAMMIES, so they finally said, ?We better start a Hall of Fame or these guys will never let anybody win?.”

Before Beer Dawgs, the members were mainly in rock and country bands. The exception was a spandex-clad gig in the 80?s for Brown, which he sheepishly denied to comment on.
