Baseball splits weekend doubleheader with Spartans
May 2, 2010
The Sacramento State baseball team split a four-game series with San Jose State University over the weekend.
The Spartans won the first game on Friday in convincing fashion, 13-1 in seven innings. Freshman second baseman Blake Miller accounted for the only Hornet run, as he launched a first-inning home run over the left field wall.
It was all downhill for the Hornets after the early one-run lead.
The Spartans scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning, one run in the fifth inning and nine runs in the seventh.
Saturday was a different story, as the Hornets swept a doubleheader from the Spartans, 7-4 and 12-3 (seven innings).
Junior infielder/designated hitter Trevor Paine hit his team-leading sixth home run of the season in a 3-5 day at the plate. Paine also drove in four runs.
Senior Robert Butler pitched 5 2/3 innings of three-run ball while striking out four hitters. Junior Andrew Galvan notched his sixth save of the season with 3 1/3 innings of relief.
In the second game, the Hornets scored eight runs in the first three innings to essentially seal the deal. Junior shortstop Kirby Young hit his fifth home run of the season to pace the Hornet attack.
Junior Brandon Sandoval threw a seven-inning complete game, picking up his second win of the season.
Sac State dropped an extra-inning affair on Sunday, 5-4 in 11 innings.
Paine would add to his team-leading total with his seventh home run in the fourth inning. He also added a two-run double in the seventh inning.
The Hornets used six pitchers in the contest. The Spartans used three, including Zack Jones, who pitched four innings of relief to earn his fourth win of the season.
Sac State moves to 16-24-1 overall and 5-7 in the Western Athletic Conference, which is tied for fourth place with San Jose State. The Spartans now boast a 17-25 record overall.
The Hornets host the Cal Golden Bears on Tuesday at Hornet Field. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
