Sacramento State sophomore Jake Johnson tied the men’s 54-hole record with his performance at the Purple & Red Invitational in Layton, Utah, which concluded Tuesday.
Johnson led the tournament after the first day by two strokes after shooting a 67 and 69. A third-round score of 73 gave Johnson a total score of 209 and landed him a second-place finish in the event.
“It was the best finish of my career,” Johnson said. “It was exciting to be in the lead with 18 holes to play.”
Johnson said he didn’t have any inkling he was going to shoot as well as he did.
“Going into the round, I wasn’t hitting all that well,” he said.
The previous stand-alone record-holder was Grant Norton, who is Johnson’s teammate. Norton did not participate in the event.
Kyle Landish finished tied for 17th place overall and second place for Sac State with a line of 75-71-72-215.
CSU Bakersfield junior Levi Garcia shot a tournament-low 64 on the final day to finish two strokes ahead of Johnson.
Bakersfield tied for fourth place in the event (874), finishing one stroke ahead of Sac State (875).
University of Utah won the event in a playoff against University of Arkansas at Little Rock.
Next up for the men’s team is the Nevada Wolf Pack Classic in Reno, Nev., which begins Monday.
