Sac State Rowing to hold annual auction this weekend
March 14, 2008
The Women’s Rowing Team of Sacramento State will hold its Third Annual Sac State Rowing Auction from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Sac State Aquatic Center.
Tickets to the event are $15 at the door or $10 with a valid One Card.
The event is being held to help pay for the costs of maintaining the rowing team’s boats, the hulls of which are made out of a lightweight but relatively fragile carbon-fiber. A freak accident last year placed one of the team’s two-seat crafts in the repair shop after the boat struck a submerged car door during the 6000 meter Head of the Port Race in West Sacramento.
Rowing team member Anne Morrison, a junior majoring in journalism, said that in an effort to remain competitive against other teams in the face of rapidly changing technology within water sports, the team recently purchased a $33,000 Vespoli V1 Model watercraft that is 60 feet long and seats up to eight rowers plus the coxswain.
The two-time defending Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association champions started off the season by defeating Santa Clara to claim the Jim Farwell Cup on Saturday at Lake Natomas. The next game is the Sacramento State Invitational, which will be held at 8 a.m. on the Saturday of the auction at Lake Natomas.
