Ferguson hurls first career no-hitter
March 3, 2005
DAVIS ?” She forgot her regular No. 14 jersey, but it just didn’t matter for Brianne Ferguson against UC Davis on Thursday afternoon.
The Sacramento State senior ace hurled her first career no-hitter, facing just three batters over the minimum in beating the Aggies 3-0 in the first game of a double header and did it all wearing a golden No. 9 jersey.
“I didn’t know we were wearing yellow today, so I didn’t bring the right jersey,” Ferguson said about the mix-up.
Of the no-hitter she said, “I’ve never thrown a no-hitter in the regular season so I was excited.”
The Hornets defeated Davis in the nightcap as well, by the score of 2-1 in eight innings. Sac State defeated the Aggies for the sixth-consecutive time dating back to last season.
Ferguson retired the side in order in the second, third, fifth and sixth innings and said because of superstitions, she went through the same routine every half inning.
Every half inning she would meet her father at the entrance to the dugout, get a sip of Propel fitness water, put on a parka and stand in the same spot in the dugout.
“Sometimes I’ll hold my glove too, but I didn’t start with it today, so I didn’t hold it all,” Ferguson said. “I think I might have to wear this jersey from now on too.”
The Hornet offense did its part, scoring three runs and pounding out six hits on Davis pitcher Jessica Hancock.
Erin Coyne picked up her then-team-high-tying sixth RBI to get the Hornets on the board in the third inning with a single to left field scoring Hornet center fielder Lindy Winkler from second base.
The Hornets got two insurance runs in the sixth inning, starting with freshman Teri Ann Caoagan’s RBI double down the left field line just past the glove of Davis third baseman Nikki Sheldon. Sophomore Katie Rhoe, pinch running for Coyne who was hit by a pitch to start the inning, scored from second on the play.
Caoagan advanced to third on a Kayla Williams ground out and then scored on a wild pitch to give the Hornets a three run advantage.
Ferguson worked a spotless sixth then hit Sheldon to begin the bottom of the seventh but got a ground out, a pop-up and then struck out Aggies catcher Ashley Johnson to cap off the no-no.
In the nightcap Nikki Cinque extended her consecutive innings without allowing an earned run streak to 42 with eight innings of solid work.
Cinque cruised through the first two and two thirds innings before surrendering a walk and a hit but then forced Megan Turman to ground out to Caoagan to end the inning.
The next inning the Aggies had their best chance to score after Sheldon again was hit by a pitch to open the fourth. Sheldon advanced on pitcher Lindsay Tognetti’s sacrifice bunt. Then after a Jessica Hancock pop out, Ashley Johnson singled to shallow centerfield. Winkler, rushing in on the play, gloved the ball and one-hopped the ball directly to catcher Joanna O’Neill to nail Sheldon at the plate and end the inning.
“Our defense is awesome, I loooove them,” Cinque said.
From there, neither team mounted a serious threat as the teams combined for one more hit and two runners left on base for the final three innings.
Under the international tiebreaker, Gloria Toledo was placed on second base to begin the eighth inning. After pinch hitter Britany Crine struck out, left fielder Hilary Johnson reached on an error by Sheldon, which got Toledo to third; Hilary Johnson got to second on the play when no Aggie covered the bag.
After Winkler grounded out to Sheldon, left fielder Lesley Mayhorn came to the plate with two outs and two runners in scoring position.
“She had been beating me on the outside, so I figured she’d try and get me out there again,” Mayhorn said. “Beyond that I was just trying to hit it on the grass and score both runners.”
Mayhorn bounced an outside drop over Tognetti’s head and into the outfield for a 2 RBI game-winning single.
Davis got one run in the bottom of the eighth on a Cinque wild pitch with two outs in the frame. The junior Elk Grove native closed things out though, inducing a Kristin Herrera ground out to end the day in a Hornets sweep.
“Our seniors stepped up and led the way today,” Hornets coach Kathy Strahan said. “They’re really showing the younger players how it’s done and it’s great to see.”
The Hornets improve to 11-6 on the season while Davis drops to 3-16.
Sac State returns home to Shea Stadium this Saturday for a noon double header with San Jose State (13-7).
NOTES: Winkler 2-for-4 in game one and is now batting .364 on the year. … Mayhorn went 2-for-4 in game two. … Coyne combined to go 2-for-6 in two games. … Caoagan is still the team leader in RBI and now has seven this season.
