Sacramento State junior Victoria Buitrago died on Friday in a three-car accident in El Dorado Hills.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident occurred at 1:30 p.m. on the northwest corner of Green Valley Road and Francisco Drive, about 27 miles from campus.
Buitrago, 22, the only occupant of the vehicle, wasn?t wearing her seatbelt and was ejected through the passenger side window, according to her roommate Erin Gormley.
The cause of the accident has not yet been determined.
Buitrago was airlifted to Sutter Roseville Medical Center at 1:49 p.m, according to the CHP. Gormley said she was kept on life support with massive head injuries until sometime between 9:30-10 p.m.
Buitrago, a member of Sac State’s novice rowing team and Gamma Phi Beta sorority, was on her way to work at the time of the accident. She was employed by her mother?s house-cleaning business, Priority Cleaning.
“Victoria was the absolute sister,” Gamma Phi Beta President Kimberly Tresca said. “Whenever we needed her she never hesitated to be there. She will live in our hearts forever and she will always be with us as a Gamma Phi Beta.”
A Vallejo native, Buitrago was in her second year at Sac State and was expected to graduate next spring. The interior design major transferred to Sac State after attending American River Junior College and Solano Community College. She graduated St. Patrick?s/St. Vincent?s High School in Vallejo in 2000.
“This is a very sad day for everyone who cares about Hornet athletics,” Sac State Athletics Director Terry Wanless said. “Our prayers are with her family and friends during this time.”
Members of the rowing team and Gamma Phi Beta were notified of her death on Friday night and Saturday morning. Grief counseling has been made available by the Women’s Resource Center and Psychological Counseling Services.
“The women of Gamma Phi Beta are continuing to deal with the loss of Victoria,” Gamma Phi Beta Adviser Karin Springer said. “It has been a difficult time for us but we are going through it together.
“The strength of our chapter has helped us cope through this,” Springer said. “We want to thank everyone for their kind words and to continue to keep us in your thoughts and prayers throughout the term.”
Sac State Assistant Rowing Coach Carrie Hagen said the team had a meeting on Saturday and is considering naming a boat after Buitrago. She said the team is trying to pull together and they feel Buitrago would want them to continue training hard.
“Victoria was an amazing individual who added heart and soul to our novice squad,” Hagen said. “She was very committed to each stroke on the water, and cared deeply for both her family and her teammates.”
Teammate Stephanie Ridlon said Buitrago amazed her everyday with her strength and courage.
“She was such a beautiful and amazing person and I feel honored to have had the opportunity to be her friend and teammate,” Ridlon said. “I will always remember her positive attitude and I?ll miss her beautiful smile.”
Sac State greek activities adviser Moe Stephens said Gamma Phi Beta is finalizing plans for a memorial service and benefit reception to take place within the next two weeks.
“Our campus now has to deal with the loss of our most precious asset, a fellow person and a fellow student,” Associated Students, Inc. President Peter Ucovich said. “Victoria Buitrago played an active role on our campus; she was involved on many levels and touched many of our lives.”
Buitrago is survived by her mother Karen, father Rick, brothers Rick, Jr. and Travis, and sister Lauryn.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. on Feb. 21 at the Oak Hills Church in Folsom. Services are open to the public.
