Tourney could provide first win for women’s hoops
December 5, 2003
Sacramento State’s women’s basketball team will have to pull off a major upset on Friday to earn their first victory of the season.
The Hornets, who have lost their first five games of the season, will square off against No. 9 Kansas State (2-2) in the Commerce Bank Invitational at Bramlage Coliseum in Manhattan, Kan.
The Hornets are coming off a 79-69 loss to Santa Clara in their home opener on Monday in which Santa Clara guard Michelle Cozad lit up the Hornets with 34 points on 10-of-15 shooting.
The Hornets defense will need to step up its game against Kansas State, who have two of the nation’s premier players, center Nicole Ohlde and forward Kendra Wecker.
The 6-foot-5 Ohlde has gotten off to a slow start in her senior season, averaging only 11 points and 5.8 points per game. The defending Big 12 Conference Player of the Year averaged 18.4 points and nine rebounds per game last season.
Wrecker, whose numbers are also down from last season, is leading Kansas State in scoring this season with 15 points and eight rebounds per game. The 5-foot-11 junior is a Wade Trophy and Naismith Player of the Year Candidate and was a member of the John R. Wooden Women’s Award Preseason All-American team.
If they are able to pull off the upset victory, the Hornets will face the winner of the Saint Louis/Texas-Pan American match up in Saturday’s championship game. If they fall, they will face the loser of that match up in the consolation game on Saturday.
Saint Louis is 3-1 this season while Texas-Pan American is 3-0.
The Hornets will return home after the tournament concludes to face San Jose State on Dec. 9 at 7:05 p.m.
