October 25, 2003
Sacramento State quarterback Blake Mori threw five interceptions in the Hornet’s 38-21 loss to Eastern Washington University Saturday night at Hornet field.
Sac State running back Tyronne Gross was injured in the first quarter after colliding with Eagle defenders on third down.
Gross picked up the first down but was hit hard low and left the game for good with a bruised right knee.
“Were down on our luck,” Sac State head football coach Steve Mooshagian said. “We’ve lost our starting running back and our starting quarterback.”
Eagle running backs Reggie Witherspoon and Eric Kimble combined for 185 rushing yards and four touchdowns.
“We thought we could run the ball tonight and we know that you need to run the ball successfully to win football games,” Eastern Washington head coach Paul Wulff said.
Hornet wide receiver Fred Amey gave his usual stellar performance despite the problems in the passing game.
A highlight of the Hornets night came when with no time left on the clock in the second quarter.
On the 20-yard line Mori threw to the right side of the end zone to and found a streaking Amey, who leapt into the air over two Eagle defenders to come down with the catch and Sac State’s first touchdown of the night making the score 21-7.
The Hornets scored again early in the second half but could not overcome five interceptions, the last of which was returned 69 yards by Isaiah Trufant for a touchdown.
