Who is the baddest man on the planet?

Javone Tavares

Should Roy Jones Jr. be considered the baddest man on the planet? For a long time Mike Tyson fit the moniker perfectly.

But since his crushing loss to Lennox Lewis, even I, a skinny 150-pound (when soaking wet) nobody, wouldn’t think twice about exchanging a few choice words with the Iron one, whereas before, my lips would have been sealed.

First of all, let’s define what the baddest man on the planet is. He is somebody that is so lethal with his fists that the only way you would fight him is if he slapped your wife or your mother, and even that might not be enough to retaliate.

With that in mind, who has succeeded as Iron Mike’s predecessor? The general consensus among boxing fans is that Roy Jones Jr., who has long been considered to be the second baddest man on the planet, should now move into the top slot. However, there are some “Roy haters,” as Jones Jr. calls them, that don’t give him the respect he deserves.

Boxing is one of those sports that takes a “what have you done for me lately” approach, and to some Jones hasn’t done anything noteworthy lately. Instead Jones has elected to fight a slew of mandatory No. 1 contenders, whom have proved to be no more than paid sparring sessions for Jones.

In the lead single, “Ya’ll Musta Forgot”, to Roy Jones Jr.’s debut album, Round One, Jones exclaims, “It ain’t that I don’t fight nobody/I just make em look like nobody”.

Good point.

Anyone who has seen Jones in action over his illustrious career knows that he is unquestionably one of the most naturally gifted boxers to ever lace up the gloves. However, anyone who has followed Jones throughout his career knows that Jones is very cognizant of getting permanently injured in the ring.

Which brings us back to our original question: Should Roy Jones Jr. be considered the baddest man on the planet?

The answer, yes!
