Volleyball

Having dropped two of three matches a weekend ago, the Sacramento State volleyball team traveled to San Marcos, Tex. to take action in the B&G Properties Classic and came home with three victories.

The Hornet?s took their final two games of the tournament as they beat Southwest Texas in straight sets 15-6, 15-7, 15-3, and Saint Louis 15-5, 15-5, 15-6.

The weekend wasn?t all success however, as the Hornet?s did drop a game against Arizona State in the first round before going on to beat IUPUI.

Men?s Soccer

With their heads in the clouds following a 2-0-1 start, the Sac State men?s soccer team was brought down to earth this weekend as they were shutout two straight games, losing to Oregon State and Chicago-Illinois in Corvallis, Ore.

“Overall, I think we went into these games a bit overconfident. We played so well at home our first three games,” head coach Michael Linenberger said.

Saturday, the Hornet?s lost to Oregon State 3-0 recording 11 shots, but only one shot on goal.

Sunday, the team fell to the same 3-0 score, as the University of Chicago-Illinois proved to be too much for the Hornets.

“We were just disappointed in the way that we played overall,” said Linenberger. “It wasn?t just offensive output, but we were giving up a lot of ?set piece? shots That was really disappointing because we pride ourselves in not giving away goals.”

Women?s Soccer

It?s not yet time to close up the Sac State record books as the Hornet women?s soccer team continues to go unbeaten.

Friday night at Hornet Stadium, the women?s soccer team took on the University of Pacific, and played to a 0-0 stalemate, as goalkeeper Megan Pickering recorded her third shutout in the season.

The Hornets will be on the road this week, traveling to play Northern Arizona on Friday, and Arizona State on Sunday.

Cross Country

The 2000 University of San Francisco Cross Country Invitational was a venue of success for the Sac State runners, as both the men?s and women?s teams took first place.

Melissa Madeson?s 23:50 time in the four-mile event paced the women?s team, putting her in second place overall, and helping the team edge out San Jose State for the top honors in the race. The University of Hawaii came in third, while Saint Mary?s and San Francisco finished in a tie for fourth place.

For the men, it was Erick Mencanini and Craig Farley who led the pack, as they finished first and second. Mencanini with a time of 20:59, and Farley, close behind, came with a time of 21:05.

San Jose State, Saint Mary?s, San Francisco, and Cal State Hayward rounded out the standings.
