Softball loses 5-0 at Pacific
April 15, 2015
Sacramento State softball traveled to University of the Pacific today to play in a nonconference game before preparing for Idaho State University this weekend. The Hornets lost to the Tigers 5-0 in tonight’s game.
The starting pitcher for the Hornets was Celina Matthias, who was coming off of a no-hitter last Saturday. She had better luck on Saturday than today, pitching four innings and giving up five hits and five runs. She gave up two walks and hit two batters today.
The Hornets gave up four runs in the first inning followed by one more in the fourth.
Matthias walked the first batter tonight and gave up a single to center field. Nicole Zapotoczny of Pacific also took advantage of the pitches tonight and got a pair of RBIs on a first-inning single. Two more runs came after that from an RBI groundout and then an error from shortstop Paige Castro.
The Hornets’ defense ended the inning giving up four runs, two hits and committing one error, while leaving one runner on base.
Sac State was not able to make a comeback in the second inning with no hits and no runs. Matthias, however, did not allow Pacific to score any more runs.
In the third inning Zamari Hinton, Kortney Solis and Sasha Margulies all grounded out. Matthias was still able to stay strong, allowing just one hit and no runs.
The Hornets were not able to get their offense going tonight when they had another short inning at the plate. Alexa Chattleton flied out to left field, Alexis Martinez grounded out to shortstop and Marissa Maligad struck out.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Tigers were able to get one more run in when Molly Bourne had an RBI and scored her teammate. Sac State allowed one run and two hits.
In the top of the fifth inning, the Hornets still could not execute the plate with one pop up and two grounders.
Kaitlyn Yerby relieved Matthias in the bottom of the fifth inning, pitching the next two innings and allowing two hits.
Margulies tried to get something going in the top of the sixth inning after she doubled down the right field line. Following her double, three out of the next four batters grounded out and one was walked.
The Tigers came close to scoring again in the sixth inning after Sara Anderson singled up the middle and Toni Santos advanced to third and tried to get home, but center fielder Chattleton threw to catcher Solis and was able to get her out.
The Hornets could not make a comeback in the seventh inning, leaving the game at 5-0 with UOP taking the win.
Sac State will play Idaho State this weekend, who are tied with the Hornets for the number one spot in the Big Sky Conference right now. They both have a 10-2 record in conference. All three games will be played at home at Shea Stadium with a doubleheader on Friday at noon and 2:30 p.m., with one more game on Saturday.
