Men’s golf places first overall in Folino Invitational, Beverly and Knoll co-medalists
February 17, 2015
Everything clicked for Sacramento State men’s golf at the Folino Invitational as they won the tournament by thirteen strokes over second place, the University of Seattle, and saw sophomore Aaron Beverly and junior Taylor Knoll share co-medalist honors.
This was the program’s first tournament win since September 2013 at the BSU Dash Thomas Memorial. At the Folino Invitational, Sac State had a major presence at the top of the leaderboard with four players in the top 15.
This was the first tournament win of Knoll and Beverly’s career. This was Beverly’s first finish in the top ten. Prior to this tournament, Beverly’s best finish was at the Barona Collegiate Cup when he tied for 11th. Knoll’s best finish came when he placed third at the SCVB Invitational in 2012 when he competed for the University of Nevada.
Knoll lead the Hornets in the third round by shooting a 69 and 3-under-par for the day. His best stretch of the day was between holes seven and 10 where he had three birdies over four holes. He finished the tournament shooting a 72-74-69-215 score.
Beverly continues to excel in the first round of tournaments as his 4-under-par round propelled him to an individual lead and paced the Hornets in an excellent position to win. He finished the tournament carding rounds of 68-73-74-215.
Sophomore Robert Parden had a strong, consistent round three shooting an even par with one birdie, one bogey and 16 pars. This is his second time tying for ninth place this season as he finished with rounds of 77-73-72-222.
After shooting 5-over-par for the first round, senior Luke Kristo settled into his game by shooting combined 2-over-par in the next two rounds. He tied for 13th place (77-73-73-223).
Senior Riley Hayfield completed the lineup for the Hornets and finished in 46th place. He shot a 79-82-77-238 for the tournament.
Sac State will continue their season March 2-3 at the Del Walker Intercollegiate Invitational in Long Beach, California.
