A quote a day may keep boredom away

Senior philosophy major Alex Geiger produces a lengthy quote before his fellow classmates just before class is in session.:

“A vest will save you from many things. A life vest will save you from drowning, a hunting vest will save you from getting shot, and a sweater vest will save you from getting laid.”

Not quite relevant to the History of Early Modern Philosophy class that started three minutes ago, but then again, the teacher is nowhere to be found.

Senior philosophy major Alex Geiger has been leaving witty comments on unattended chalkboards for years, which this semester, are erased every Tuesday and Thursday at a few minutes past noon by philosophy professor David Corner.

Geiger got his start as a classroom propagandist in a high school Spanish class.

“The teacher was always late to class, kind of like now, and we were bored,” Geiger said.

Most of Geiger’s quotes this semester are from stand-up comedians, but he is looking to do more than just entertain and fight boredom.

“I figured sometimes they can enlighten people,” Geiger said. “I just do it (because) I like it.”

Some students are indifferent to Geiger’s shtick, reading his quotes whether they want to or not.

“Sometimes it’s funny, sometimes it’s just dry,” said Bobby Roberts, junior English major.

Others philosophized on his greater purpose.

“Its like, blackboards are the original blogging,” said junior Nelly Hayatghaib. “It’s the original way to get something across to the masses without actually verbally communicating.”
