Women’s soccer loses, will be No. 2 seed in tourney

Its winning streak ended, but there is a lot of soccer left to play for the Sacramento State women’s soccer team.
The Hornets (8-7-3, 4-1-1) wrapped up their regular season with a 4-1 loss at Weber State (12-4-1, 5-1-0) on Saturday. The Wildcats will host the Big Sky tournament, which starts on Thursday, in Ogden, Utah.
In the fourth minute the Wildcats got on the board on a goal from forward Lindsay Davis. Assists went to forward Linsey McFarland and midfielder Rochelle Hoover. Hoover would play a disastrous role in the game for the Hornets. Hoover scored in the 34th minute to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead on an assist from forward Sarah Cortez. With less than a minute left on the half Hornets midfielder Katie Burton scored her first goal of the season to cut the Wildcat lead to one going into halftime. Defender Marissa Condren was credited with the assist.
The Hornets were out shot 11-3 in the first half.
The Wildcats came out strong and put the game away in the second half. In the 53rd minute Hoover scored again to make the score 3-1 in favor of Weber State off an assist from midfielder Hayley McCoy. Finally, in the 72nd minute Hoover capped off her day with her third goal, this one a penalty kick, to make the score 4-1 in favor of Weber.
Hornets goalie Jenny Lawrence was very busy inside the box saving 13 shots. The Wildcats held the edge in shots by a tally of 24-14. Hornets forward Katie McCoy led the team with four shots on goal while Hoover attempted an astounding seven shots on goal for the Wildcats.
Weber State will host the Big Sky Tournament for the second time in three years. The Hornets go into the tournament as the No. 2 seed in the four-team tournament. Their semifinal opponent is unknown as of press time.
The appearance by the Hornets will be their first since 2001.
