(BERKELEY, Calif.) – University of California-Berkeley sophomore Junior Garcia, an avid soccer fan and a member of Zeta Psi fraternity, died in a car accident early Tuesday morning. He was 18.

Garcia was driving to Berkeley, Calif., on Interstate 5 around 3 a.m. when he fell asleep at the wheel, said sophomore Jennifer Nguyen, Garcia’s girlfriend, who was asleep in the car at the time of the accident.

Garcia lost control of the vehicle, crossed the southbound lanes and hit the side shoulder, the California Highway Patrol told the Bakersfield Californian on Tuesday.

He suffered a fatal contusion to the head, Nguyen said. She received minor scrapes and bruises.

A player on the UC-Berkeley club soccer team, Garcia was in his hometown of San Diego to play against San Diego State University and the University of San Diego, she said.

He decided to leave San Diego late in the evening to watch his younger brother coach a soccer game and spend some more time with his family after the games, according to Nguyen.

A talented midfielder, Garcia was incredibly dedicated to the team, said freshman Brian Karamian, a close friend of Garcia and member of the club soccer team.

The team had dinner together to reflect on Garcia’s life, he said.

“He was a phenomenal soccer player — he should have been playing Division I soccer,” he said. “He was a key asset to the team.”

Garcia was an incredibly hard worker, Karamian said.

“When he came to Berkeley, he didn’t have a whole lot,” he said. “Everything he’s done, he’s done through his hard work.”

Karamian, who has played soccer with Garcia for two years, said that Garcia was incredibly easygoing.

“He was easy to make friends with, a really fun guy to be around,” he said.

Zeta Psi officials said that he will be very missed.

“He was loved by absolutely everyone in the house,” officials said in a statement.

Family members will be holding a wake on Monday and a funeral service next week in San Diego, Nguyen said.

Zeta Psi is currently arranging a memorial service at the fraternity house later on this week, fraternity officials said.
