Dim tunnel worries pedestrians

The tunnel located at the north entrance of campus, off of JStreet has a history of being poorly lit. The lights have eitherbeen been burned out, vandalized or dim in some areas.

Although the tunnel is located partly on campus, it ismaintained by the city of Sacramento.

Wesley Hiratsuka, light and signal supervisor for the city ofSacramento, said that the lights were changed in the tunnel earlierthis year.

“If nobody places a report with us about the lights beingout, then there is nothing that we can do about it.”Hiratsuka said.

“Good lighting on campus, as well as within the tunnels,is always important for people’s safety,” said JessicaHeskin of the Women’s Resource Center.

In the past, some of the light fixtures have been vandalizedwith a baseball bat and other objects, Hiratsuka said.

There are 35,000 lights in the city, making it difficult forofficials to keep all public lighting operating properly. Ifcitizens do not make reports about malfunctioning lights, they maytake quite some time to be fixed, Hiratsuka said.

Once the incident is reported to the light and signaldepartment, it will only take a day or two before the lights arerepaired, said Hiratsuka.

To report lights that have been vandalized or are burned out, call the light and signal department for the city of Sacramento at(916) 433-6313. They are open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday throughFriday.
