Sacramento State had a successful run in the Fresno State Volleyball Invitational this past weekend, finishing 3-1.
Hornet players Tasman Dwyer and sophomore Lisa Beauchene rounded out the weekend play earning all-tournament honors.
Sac State began the invitational Friday afternoon with the first of three tournament sweeps coming against the University of Missouri-Kansas City. The Hornets prevailed 30-20, 30-18, 30-20.
But the Hornets? momentum was halted when they faced host California State University, Fresno that same night. After starting off with a two-game lead, they dropped the final three en route to the defeat.
“Fresno State stepped it up after the first two games and we began committing hitting errors. We were a little out of control,” Hornet coach Debby Colberg said.
Four players from Fresno State made it to the all-tournament team, including Most Valuable Player Whitney Arena.
Dwyer and junior Jayme Wright had 16 kills each as Alison Gahr added 13 against Fresno. Kelly Voeltz tied her career high with 12. Beauchene had nine kills, 10 digs and a season high 62 assists.
Saturday began and ended with a bang, as Sac State swept both Arkansas-Little Rock University and Morgan State University.
“We were able to defeat our weaker opponents but we lose to teams that pose a challenge to us such as Fresno State,” Colberg said. “We must work on control and limit our errors.”
Hornet sophomore Kazmiera Imrie led with 11 kills and six blocks and stood out against Arkansas Little-Rock.
Dwyer finished with nine kills in the contest with Loretta Coffman?s eight kills and seven digs. Coffman also slammed down 11 kills against Morgan State to help the Hornets sweep.
Sac State (5-3) will try to make some noise in the Indiana University Credit Union/Taylor Sportswear Classic this Friday and Saturday.
Indiana, Ball State University and Dayton University are slated to compete in the tournament.
