Sacramento State got a taste of St’ Patrick’s Day when the traditionalIrish music of Driving with Fergus played in the Redwood Room of theUnion Thursday.

The Davis band explained the story of Irish immigration through music, andused unique instruments, including the bouzouki (a Greek instrumentadopted and now widely played in Irish circles), the penny whistle, thelow whistle, the Irish flute, the bodhran (a shallow Irish goatskindrum), and yes?bagpipes.

“The group plays traditional Irish music plus they do a little bit ofstorytelling,” said Bill Olmsted, program advisor for the UniversityUnion.

Vince Wolfe and Lewis Santer of Driving with Fergus have been playingIrish music for three years and also play for weddings and parties.

When the band played last semester, Sac State students sat back andlistened to several relaxing songs and Irish dance tunes. The songstell personal stories of the people of Ireland. Songs included “3Drunken Maidens,” “Low Lands of Holland” and “Tommy Todd.”
