Up and coming metal band hits Sacramento
February 16, 2001
The newest contender for the metal throne is straight out of Florida and going by the name of Nonpoint. Set to open later this year on the Orgy tour alongside Spineshank, a band more popular to the Sacramento crowd, Nonpoint will be blowing through town this Sunday, Feb. 18, at the Crest Theatre.
Since the collaboration of the band three years ago, Nonpoint has accumulated a massive regional following through the help of the glitzy Miami dance scene. The band is composed of lead singer Elias Soriano, guitarist Andrew Goldman, drummer Robb Rivera and bassist, KB.
“These songs [from “Statement”] represent the three years we?ve been together,” says Soriano, also the band’s lyricist.
Along with their popularity in Florida, Nonpoint has amassed a following throughout the country and is heading westward. The first thing that attracts the audience about Nonpoint, are the harsh vocals that Soriano strains to do.
“I have to be safe and be careful with it, because my voice is the breadwinner for me,” Soriano told the West Valley View.
The band also has a strong Puerto Rican decent, which is manifested throughout their debut CD, “Statement.” One track, “Orgullo,” is sung completely in Spanish, with a little salsa thrown in for some added spice.
A main attraction fans have to Nonpoint is in the relationship that the band obtains through their shows. Generating as many fans as possible is the number one goal for the band, who have achieved well beyond their expectations.
“Our live shows are pure chaos,” said Soriano. “Screaming kids with smiles on their faces? non-stop crowd surfing. We have a great relationship with our fans.”
Nonpoint is currently being featured on MCA Records, but had to fight off plenty of offers from other companies after word got around that they routinely headlined sold out shows.
“No frills,” maintains Rivera, the band’s drummer. “What you see is what you get.”
