Environmental safety crews were called to the Residence Hall Parking lot Wednesday in response to a call concerning a possible gasoline spill.

“Someone called at 11 a.m. to report a smell of gasoline in the area,” said Assistant Vice President of Public Affairs Ann Reed.

Environmental Compliance Services, Inc., of Rancho Cordova, was called to clean up the gasoline, and campus parking employees blocked off the spill location with cones and yellow caution tape and directed traffic in the parking lot.

“We respond to different spills in a lot of areas,” said Maria de Sousa, President and CEO of ECS.

Wearing protective clothing, hard hats and neon yellow vests, de Sousa and her crew cleaned up the gasoline by Wednesday afternoon.

Although a source of the gasoline spill could not be found, employees speculated that approximately one gallon of gasoline spilled from a vehicle gas tank, said Linda Hafar, Associate Director of Plant Services.

“We suspect that someone had a full tank and the gas cap was off,” Hafar said. The main concern was that the gasoline would spread into the storm drains, said Hafar said.”They could not find a source of the gasoline,” Reed said, but added that the crew “absorbed what they found.”
