Ladies Man better off on television
October 12, 2000
The Ladies Man, directed by Reginald Hudlin (House Party, Boomerang) is a comedy about a groovy, smooth-talking radio host who runs into trouble while chasing the women.
This film stars Tim Meadows (Saturday Night Live), Will Ferrell (SNL), Tiffani-Amber Thiessen (“Beverly Hills 90210”), Billy Dee Williams (Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back), Lee Evans (There?s Something About Mary) and Karyn Parsons (Hilary on The Fresh Prince of Bel Air).
Leon Phelps (Meadows) is a popular late-night radio call-in host who is a self-proclaimed expert on the ladies. He gives his advice to men and women about matters of the heart and the body.
Leon runs into trouble after his zany antics get him and his producer; Julie (Parsons) fired from the station. He is running out of options when he receives a letter from an unknown source, signed “Sweet Thing”, that promises Leon passion and money if he can find her.
Leon must sort through all of his past lovers to find out who “Sweet Thing” is. He has had so many past ladies that his search is difficult, and is made much more complex by a group of upset husbands who are looking for the man that ruined their lives. This group is headed up by Lance (Ferrel) and Barney (Evans), who are just two of the husbands whose wives have fallen into Leon?s charming ways.
I expected much more from Meadows in this movie. His “Ladies Man” sketch on “Saturday Night Live” has proven to be a hilarious portrayal of what he thinks the women want. This film fell short of the laughter from the “SNL” sketches. With this cast of characters, you might expect some more hilarious situations. This movie had some good comedic scenes, but the laughter was more from outburst in the audience than from the scenes in the movie.
The high-points in this film came from the other stars in the movie. Will Ferrel, plays the leader of the wronged husbands. We see some of his great comedic instincts and outfits in this film. You have to laugh at him in his wrestling outfits. Hilarious!
Leon?s home in this movie is also very intriguing. He has turned a houseboat (The Skank Tuary) into a love boat filled with love gadgets, candles and his assortment of love lotions. It made me re-think how my apartment is decorated.
The costumes done by Eydi Caines-Floyd fit the characters very well. Caines-Floyd should be applauded for her work in creating the image of the star, even if he did not play the part as well as expected.
Composer, Marcus Miller did a wonderful job with the soundtrack of this movie. The music was great and it fit the time period very well.
Other than that, some of the characters are just simply there, even though Tiffani-Amber Thiessen is pretty hot. Maybe a bigger role for her and my opinions would have changed.
The love story in this film is also pretty corny. Leon has a wonderful woman on his side and doesn?t even realize it. I guess that was supposed to be some of the comedy, but it missed the boat.
The Ladies Man, does not live up to its “SNL predecessor?s, Superstar and A Night at the Roxbury. Maybe Meadows and the rest of the “SNL” cast should just stick to what works. Two movies from one television show is enough, when you try to reach too far things don?t always turn out as planned.
