Volleyball takes season home opener
September 5, 2000
Tuesday marked the 2000 season home opener for the Sac State volleyball team, but the Sunbirds of Fresno Pacific proved to be little more than a practice for the Hornets who swept all three games to take the win in front of a crowd of 229.
The Hornets won the first game 15-2, led by Ehster Rogers who got things started for the Hornets with the game’s first point. Olivia Thomas continued the drive with an ace, and Jayme Wright racked up three kills. Sac State capitalized on the frequent miscues of the Fresno Pacific team, and kept control of the game from start to finish.
The second game started slow for the Hornets, as they fell to a 2-0 deficit early. However, they would bounce back with a four-point rally that would allow them to take command of the game, and they went on to win 15-10.
The final game of the night proved to be more of a battle for the Hornets. The Sunbirds took an early lead and held it until a block by Kelly Voeltz pushed the Hornets to their first lead of the game (9-8). Game three allowed freshman Lisa Beachene to show her stuff. She came up big with four kills to help the Hornets pull away to a 15-8 win.
While the Hornets took the match in dominate fashion, head coach Debby Colberg was dissatisfied with the teams passing, and she said that the team needs to improve in that area. Overall however, Colberg came away very confident.
“It’s a rare luxury to play the whole team,” Colberg said, “and it’s nice to have some players try different positions.”
Wright, who had nine kills and 17 digs in the game, said that the game was a good chance to execute what they have worked hard on in practice, but also feels that the team needs to work on “simple mistakes” that gave the opposition opportunities. The next volleyball home game is Sept. 12.
