Vanessa Gomez is a senior majoring in journalism. This is her third semester at The State Hornet and her first semester as a news staffer, having previously been a staffer for the visuals and multimedia sections. She previously was the news editor at San Joaquin Delta College’s student newspaper, The Collegian, for two semesters. She is also an intern at EdSource’s California Student Journalism Corps.

May was Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month. The State Hornet looks at how the university highlights and supports this community, while expanding on the different ways to continue supporting marginalized communities.

15th Out of the Darkness Walk unites campus despite windy weather

Sacramento State’s 15th annual Out of the Darkness Walk was held on Thursday, April 17. Nearly 900 people registered to show their support and respect for suicide preventions. A resource fair before the walk featured organizations from both in and outside Sac State.

The 2026 Nicholas F. Burnett Hornet Cup wrapped up Sunday, March 22. Multiple speech and debate events were held across campus, giving participants a chance to hone their public speaking and improvisation skills.

Inside the studio, we uncover the history and the message behind the importance of the cultural dance
The State Hornet visited Ballet Folklorico Nube De Oro, a studio based in Sacramento taught by artistic director Osvaldo Ramírez Vidales, a current professor at Sacramento State. Ballet Folkorico is also home to many Sac State students and alumni.
