The Sac State softball team completed the Capitol Classic Softball Tournament today with a 4-2 victory over Northern Colorado. Sac State finishes the tournament at 4-1 after the Hornets’ red-hot bats piled up 29 runs in five games.

On Saturday the Hornets found themselves struggling to get a rhythm going against No. 11 Oklahoma as Lauren Eckermann dominated Sac State in the first game of a doubleheader. Eckermann had as many strikeouts (four) as hits allowed in a complete game shutout, giving the Sooners a 2-0 victory in the early match-up.

In the afternoon game the Hornets’ bats were largely dormant until the final frame, when Sac State blasted three home runs en route to a 7-4 win over Colorado State. Sac State totaled six runs in the seventh after the Rams had entered the inning with a 4-1 lead. Junior Izmena Cabrera was 4 for 4 with an RBI in the game and junior Whitney Loomis knocked in three runs with her bases-clearing big fly in the seventh.

In today’s match-up, the Hornets and Bears were tied at two runs a piece in the fourth inning when Sac State took the lead for good on senior Hilary Johnson’s RBI single to make it 3-2. Sophomore Brittani Clifford was credited with a win after taking the mound in the second inning in relief of freshman Megan Schaefer. Clifford fanned four while allowing only three hits in five innings of shut-out softball.

The Hornets will return home to play Wisconsin at 1 p.m. on Wednesday.
