The Sacramento State men’s golf team teed off their 2001-2002 campaign with an eighth place finish at the Countrywide Home Loans Intercollegiate Tournament.

The tournament was held last Monday and Tuesday at the Wood Ranch Golf Club, the home course of California State University, Northridge.

The University of California, Irvine Anteaters took the tournament team title for the second consecutive year with a three-round score of 871.

The Hornets finished second among Big Sky teams and tied for eighth overall with a team score of 897. Eastern Washington University led all Big Sky teams with a sixth place finish and a team point total of 895.

The Hornets’ top finisher was freshman Zack Spinuzzi. Spinuzzi, a Discovery Bay native, finished the tournament 3-over-par (72-73-74-219) and in a tie for 12th place.

Brandon Hillpot, of the University of California, Riverside, shot an astounding 8-under-par (69-70-69-208) to take the individual title. Anteater Jeff Coburn, who shot a mere 1-under-par to win last year’s tournament, finished in a disappointing sixth place this year.Finishing one stroke behind Spinuzzi and in 16th place for the Hornets was junior Bill Hurwitz (74-72-74-220). Hurwitz, a Valley High School graduate, finished last year’s Countrywide Home Loans Intercollegiate tournament in a tie for eighth place.

Rounding out the top five Hornet finishers were Craig Callens (27th place, 69-78-77-224), John Bowen (83rd place, (73-81-80-234), and Aki Matsumura (114th place, (83-82-82-247).

Sac State has high expectations this year coming off a third-place finish in the Big Sky men’s championship tournament last year. The Hornets finished last year’s tournament behind Weber State University, and Portland State University.

For the past 12 seasons, the Hornet men’s and women’s golf teams have been coached by Rene Mondine. The past two years, Mondine won the Big Sky men’s coach of the year award.

The women’s team will continue its season today and Thursday at Blackhorse Country Club in Monterey. The Hornet men will compete next Monday at Bakersfield.
